Concern over axing of ‘vital’ bus service

East Garioch councillor Martin Ford has written to bus operator Stagecoach Bluebird in a bid to maintain a link used by Newmachar residents for shopping and to visit the doctor.

The revised bus timetable being introduced by Stagecoach Bluebird on October 29 will see the new 35/35A services to Aberdeen on the A947 through Newmachar all running through Dyce via Victoria Street, instead of every other bus running via Riverview Drive and the turning circle behind Asda. This means the loss of the direct bus services from Newmachar to Asda and the adjacent doctors’ surgery, Dyce Health Centre in Altonrae Gardens.

Many Newmachar residents are registered at the Dyce doctors’ surgery and for some elderly residents the loss of a direct bus service is going to present a real difficulty in getting there.

In his letter to Stagecoach Bluebird, Cllr Ford points out: ‘With the service via Asda gone, the public transport options for Newmachar residents needing to visit the doctor in Dyce are a taxi (at least £10 each way I understand) or changing buses in Victoria Street in Dyce (which involves crossing a busy road and where the northbound bus stops lack shelters).’

Martin Ford said: “I have been contacted by residents concerned at the loss of the buses they use to go shopping and for visiting the doctor.

“Residents are asking that at least some services are reinstated to run via Asda. The need to use this bus service to get to the doctors’ surgery means it is seen as a vital link, particularly by those who depend on public transport.”

In his letter, Cllr Ford asks Stagecoach Bluebird to ‘urgently consider reinstating some services via Asda on the 35/35A route’.

The bus services affected are commercial services not run at the behest of Aberdeenshire Council.
