Food waste on council menu
Proposed changes to waste collection arrangements in Aberdeenshire that could see food waste collected weekly from homes are to be considered by councillors.
Aberdeenshire Council’s Infrastructure Services Committee will be asked to consider an interim review of the authority’s Integrated Sustainable Waste Management Strategy on Thursday.
The strategy, created in 2001, guides waste management in Aberdeenshire up to 2020. The interim review takes account of changes in waste management across the UK, Scotland and Aberdeenshire.
A key change has been the Scottish Government’s introduction of the concept of Zero Waste which features a programme of bans on landfilling materials such as food waste, along with compulsory collections of various materials from householders and traders.
In addition, targets are changing from weight-based to an increased focus on the environmental impact of recycling and composting.
A report to go before the committee highlights that investment is to be made in kerbside collections and recycling centres and points, along with other innovations to enable the public to reduce, reuse and recycle more of their waste.
The report adds the aim is to make recycling an ‘everyday behaviour’ for residents, businesses and visitors.
A series of options is to be considered by the committee, with a recommendation that proposals for weekly food collections, coupled with refuse and combined recycling collections on alternate weeks, is supported.
The recommended proposal, plus an alternative option, would see households use two wheeled bins and a smaller food waste container.
The options vary in cost from around £15million to almost £20million for full implementation, with the preferred arrangement being phased over a course of no less than two years.
In addition to the waste collection proposals, it is recommended that a further report come before a future meeting of the committee once the waste management strategy has been fully revised.
