WEDNESDAY, (November 7) saw the first ever competitive eleven-a-side match on the new 3G surface at the Garioch Sports Centre. The match featured Inverurie Academy Seniors and Fraserburgh Academy in the Scottish Cup with the Inverurie side progressing following a comprehensive 11-3 victory.

Sports Centre Operations Manager Kevin Bonarius welcomed the school teams to the venue and said, “Garioch Sports Centre is working along with the local Academy providing training times three days per week and we are pleased to see the full pitch being used for competitive matches.

“We appreciate that the surface will predominantly be used for training and seven-a-side matches and the likes but we are also keen to see competitive eleven-a-sides on the surface. It is a very big pitch and probably suited to older youths and adults but with the benefit of floodlights and the near certainty that the surface will be playable it allows the Academy to schedule matches without having to make last minute cancellations - a fact appreciated by the Academy staff involved in their football teams.”

He added “So far the new pitch has been greatly welcomed by the local clubs and schools and they have been extremely complimentary about the quality of the surface. We are keen to see this facility well used by the community”
