McDonald welcomes actions to help farmers alleviate problems

North-east SNP MSP Mark McDonald has commended the Scottish Government’s actions to alleviate problems encountered by Scottish farmers hit by the adverse weather this year.

Rural Affairs Secretary Richard Lochhead has stated the Scottish Government’s commitment to supporting those who have been affected. Measures in place include writing to banks to update them of the timing of Single Farm Payments and encouraging that maximum flexibility is offered to farmers who have not received payment by the start of December. Furthermore, the Rural Affairs Secretary has confirmed that the Scottish Government will work with farmers in NVZs to reduce penalties occurred for failing to comply with slurry spreading rules.

Commenting, Mr McDonald said: “Farmers have undoubtedly suffered at the hands of the adverse weather this year. Agriculture plays an essential role in the North East and is it reassuring for farmers to see how committed The Scottish Government is with helping them through these uncontrollable conditions.

“I know without doubt that farmers will welcome these measures. I am fully aware of the desperately difficult year that this has been for Scottish farmers and am glad that the Scottish Government is continuing to ensure that measures are in place to support them and alleviate these difficult situations”.
