THE summer sun has finally brought out the summer blooms in the town's hanging baskets and floral boxes.
This year's floral display, organised by local charity, Inverurie Environmental Improvement Group (IEI) has used around 3,800 plants.

Ranald Allan, IEI Chairman, said: "The blooms have come out at just the right time, as the town will host the ju
dges from the Beautiful Scotland competition next Wednesday afternoon.

"This year we have 170 flower containers around the town centre and on Inverurie Town Hall.

The annual display is only made possible through the support we receive from local business, national businesses with branches in the town and from Aberdeenshire Council.

"The council have done a great job in improving the Memorial Gardens in the town centre and the flowers there complement the hanging baskets.

"We are keeping our fingers crossed for a sunny summer day for the Beautiful Scotland judges' visit as we want them to see our town at it its best.

As in past years, Pitcaple Environmental Project (PEP), that provides training and activities for clients of the Harlaw Day Centre, has planted out the containers and they were put in place by a team of volunteers from the Rotary Club of Inverurie and IEI.

The charity's blue Transit Van with water tanks routinely makes its way through the town in the summer as IEI volunteers water the plants twice a week, no matter what the weather.

Ranald continued: "IEI volunteers go out on a Wednesday and a Sunday on the watering rota, but we would like to have more volunteers to help with the watering.

"We appreciate that there is a degree of inconvenience to traffic when the watering round is underway, but we hope that folk understand this is necessary to maintain the plants.

Anyone interested in joining the watering rota or any business, group or individual interested in sponsoring baskets should contact IEI on 07802 471705.

The Inverurie Environmental Improvement Group was formed in spring of 2003. The committee has representatives from Inverurie Business Association, Inverurie Community Council, The Rotary Club of Inverurie, Inverurie Horticultural Society, Craigdon, Mitchells, local providers of day care services for older and disabled people and a number of supportive Inverurie residents.
