TWO top celebrity chefs will come to Inverurie this summer to make their debut at the North east's premier food event.
Simon Rimmer and Tony Tobin are to appear at Taste of Grampian, where an estimated 100 food related stands will be on show, at the Thainstone Centre on Saturday, June 7.
Both chefs are TV regulars; Mr Rimmer on BBC2's 'Something for Everyone' and M
r Tobin on the BBC series 'Ready Steady Cook'. The pair will take centre stage at the festival, which last year attracted a record crowd of more than 14,000 visitors.
The two celebrities will give demonstrations throughout the day, and the event will be rounded off by a cookery duel in the style of Ready Steady Cook. Additional demonstrations will be given by Two Fat Laddies – Sandy Greig and Rogert Bruce and by food historian and TV presenter, Alan Coxon.
Grampian's winning chefs of the year will be showcasing their skills and there will be competitions for school children, school cooks and a contest for members of the Scottish Women's Rural Institute. The Garioch Fiddlers and Inverurie and District Pipe Band will provide musical entertainment.
New to Taste of Grampian this year will be a covered area on the outdoor arena and Banff based oat millers Hamlyns of Scotland are to sponsor a children's food demonstration delivered by mother of six and food writer, Fi Bird.
For children, there will be a farmyard and a circus and the Portsoy Skippers will demonstrate their skills on skipping ropes.
Brian Pack, Taste of Grampian Steering Group Chairman had stated that the fresh look of the event coincided with the new debate on food policy in Scotland.
He added: "Taste of Grampian has been in the vanguard of captivating the interest in local food since we held our first event at Thainstone in 2000.
"There has, over the last year, been a huge increase in interest in the provenance of food nationally and more recently the launch of a debate on food policy by the Scottish Government.
"This all underscores the missions of Taste of Grampian since we started all those years ago – to give the general public a real insight into the real local food treasures that are available on their doorstep."
Mr Pack expects the growing interest in local food to attract an increasing number of food producers to the event.
Organisers of Taste of Grampian include Aberdeenshire Council, ANM Group, the Grampian Food Forum and Scottish Enterprise Grampian.
The main sponsors of the festival are McLeish Brothers, the delicatessen and convenience store chain. Other sponsors are Quality Meat Scotland, Tesco, The Food Standards Agency, airport operator BAA, Clydesdale Bank, the Mercure Ardoe House Hotel, Minto, More Than Kitchens, the Store and accountants Ritson Smith. The event is supported by Aberdeen City and Shire.
