THERE was a diamond jubilee last week for a local couple whose love affair began in 1947.
Thursday, March 6 marked 60 years of marriage for Ronald and Edith Lowson, and celebrations continued on Friday (March 7) and beyond.

At noon last Friday, Ronald and Edith of Cobbans Lane, Inverurie, were presented with a bouquet of flowers and b
ottle of whisky from local councillor Richard Cowling on behalf of Aberdeenshire Council and on Sunday (March 9) the couple, together with family and friends, enjoyed a veritable banquet at a local hotel.

Recalling their first meeting Ronald said: "It was a farmers' dinner and dance at Whiterashes Village Hall. I rode there on my motorbike, and Edith came on her pushbike. It was love at first sight – I took her home – she rode pillion and I carried her bike over my head."

Married in 1948, the couple honeymooned in Abelour before moving to Aberdeen where Ronald worked as an agricultural engineer with a subsequent move to Huntly, their home for the next 40 years - until retirement brought them back to Inverurie.

Commenting on the longevity of their marriage, Ronald said: "It's about being honest. We never did anything without the other one knowing – there were no secrets. Everything we did we did together, that's the secret. We have had our ups and downs, our arguments, but the best of it is making it up."

Edith and Ronald have three children, five grandchildren and one great-grandson.
