THE first week of the ACPOS Summer Safety Campaign, which is targeting drivers under the influence of drink or drugs, has been described as "disappointing" by Grampian Police.
Between Monday, July 14 and Monday (July 21), 29 motorists across the Grampian area were arrested and charged with either driving under the influence of alcohol, being drunk in charge of a vehicle or driving under the influence of drugs.
Eight mo
torists were caught in Aberdeen, 16 in Aberdeenshire and five in Moray. They included 24 men aged between 18 and 61 years of age and five women between the ages of 20 and 45.
On Sunday (July 20), a 24-year-old man and a 59-year-old man were arrested in Fraserburgh and Inverurie, respectively for drink driving. Both males were found to be three times the legal drink drive limit.
Sergeant Neil Morrison, Road Safety Unit, said: "It is disappointing that, despite reiterating a similar message during previous campaigns of this sort, several motorists remain hell-bent on driving whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
"Drink driving cannot be condoned but to drive a vehicle whilst more than three times the legal drink drive limit is deeply concerning."
Sergeant Morrison continued: "If anything positive can be taken from these results it is the fact that 29 motorists will now face a lengthy period of disqualification and as a result will reduce the opportunity for them to either injure themselves or someone else for that matter.
"Drink/drug driving should be seen by everyone as being socially unacceptable and I would encourage anyone with information about a suspected drink/drug driver to contact either Grampian Police on 0845 600 5 700 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 to report the matter."
