Life Centre campaigners outline proposed plans

CAMPAIGNERS in support of the proposed Garioch Life Centre have launched an information film, which is on show at two venues in Inverurie.
They hope generate interest and letters of support for the proposed new health centre, which would be located on the site at the corner of Victoria Street and Westfield Road, and would replace the existing Health Centre that is no longer large enough
to support Inverurie and the surrounding environs.

A new plan was submitted to Aberdeenshire Council Garioch Area Committee earlier this month and campaigners in support of the Life Centre say they have no intention of letting it fail through lack of support.

"I think that most people expected the Life Centre plans to be passed by the council but around 80 objections led to the application being rejected and 20,000 patients lost out," said campaign leader Bert Hosie of the Inverurie Doctor Patient Participation Group (DDPG).

The short silent film featuring graphic representation of the new Life Centre will be on show in the main waiting room of Inverurie Health Centre and also in the Tourist Information Centre. The campaigners also plan to produce a leaflet on the proposed new facility.

The group will also produce another version of the film with additional features, including an interview with Dr Jim Beattie and will make it available to any interest groups in the area. Bert Hosie has also prepared a slide presentation and will take this and the film to any groups wishing to hear about the Life Centre.

The proposed Garioch Life Centre would bring a number of local health services together under one roof and also provide space for therapists, a snack bar, exhibition area and retail units.

The plan re-submitted to Aberdeenshire Council shows the provision of a substantial parking area, traffic calming measures and the retention of an Inverurie Academy football pitch, with the existing pitch removed and relocated in a different position closer to the school.

"There was a lot of misinformation around over the previous plan" claimed Bert "but with this proposal we want to ensure that correct information goes to the public."

The Garioch Life Centre would have substantial expansion space for the health centre area and plans to incorporate hydrotherapy facilities, physiotherapy and NHS dental treatment rooms.

"There was some concern that the health centre is on the first floor of the new building but there will be a large public lift, a special stretcher lift for emergencies and a wide staircase to provide access, " said Bert.

"The DPPG would like people to write to their councillors and to the council in support of the proposal," said Bert, "It is not acceptable that the fastest growing town in Scotland has to rely on an out-of-date health centre which has been temporarily extended with prefabricated units.

The DPPG is made up of ten members of the public from the Inverurie Health Centre's patient list and two GPs from the Health Centre, and the group was set up to represent the interests of the patients.
