A DARTS competition held in aid of Breast Cancer Care has raised more than £1,600 for the charity.
The event was organised by local postie Graham Watson and his colleague Alex Edwards and was held in the Inverurie Loco Works Social Club in Inverurie on Saturday (May 31). There was a ladies' and a gents' competition and a raffle and auction was als
o held.

The gents' competition was sponsored by SCOTVQ, with Hi Fry and Les Stuart Joinery sponsoring the ladies' tournament. It was the third year in succession that Graham has organised the tournament and he was delighted to report that the latest one had been the most successful to date.

He said: "It was the best event so far. Although we had fewer men competing this time around - 45 - we had 20 ladies, which meant we were able to have gents' and ladies' competitions for the first time.
"The event itself raised £1,182 but Royal Mail agreed to match the total pound for pound up to a maximum of £500, which took the total to over £1,600."

Winner of the gents' tournament was Chris Mackie, who beat Keith Robertson 4-0 in the final. It was the second year in a row that Keith had finished runner-up. Christine Hyde beat Lorraine Hyde 4-2 in the final of the ladies' competition.

The best leg was a 13 darter by Craig Robertson and Alan Green managed the highest checkout with a 148.

Among the items up for grabs in the auction were a round for four at Kemnay Golf Club, a darts shirt donated by professional player Adrian Lewis, a print from a local artist and an Aberdeen FC signed football. The star lot was a signed Celtic FC football, donated by Barry Robson, which went for £301. The successful bidder was Mike Beedie.

The prizes on the day were presented by Ria Beddie of SCOTVQ. Ria, herself a breast cancer survivor, also has a company which sells underwear for those who have been affected by the disease. Further details of this are available at www.braria.co.uk.

Graham added: "I'd like to thank all the sponsors, everybody who took part and Heather and her staff at the Locos Social Club for all their efforts. It was so successful that I'm already planning to hold another tournament in late May next year."
