TOP Inverurie swimming star Hannah Miley, who recently scooped 10 gold medals at the Scottish Gas National Swimming Championships in Glasgow, will now be able to combine her academic studies with climbing up the world rankings, thanks to a sports scholarship programme organised and funded by Robert Gordon University's RGU: SPORT.
Hannah, is one of 15 outstanding student athletes, to benefit from the scholarship programme. RGU: SPORT is investing £20,000 to enable the sportsmen and women to compete at the highest level, including the Olympics in some cases, in a wide variety
of competitive sports including golf, swimming and horse-riding.

Hannah will be awarded up to £2,000 per year with tailor-made programmes devised to support her individual needs, sports discipline and academic course requirements. These include sports coaching, conditioning advice and physiological and performance testing, expert support and guidance on nutrition and sports science, assistance with costs associated with the sport, access to advice on performance and lifestyle management as well as subsidised University accommodation.

Hannah was in record-breaking form recently at the European Short Course Swimming Championships in Istanbul. She won gold in the 400m Individual Medley, and set a British record in the process. The second year Sports and Exercise Science student is set to take part in the Commonwealth Games in India later this year, but is no stranger to the competition, having come 4th in the 400m Individual Medley , and 7th in the 200m Individual Medley in Melbourne four years ago.

She also received the Paisley 500 trophy for the best overall performance at the Scottish Gas National Swimming Championships. The RGU: SPORT scholar won: 200m, 400m and 800m freestyle, 100m and 200m breaststroke, 200m and 400m Individual Medley, 100 and 200m butterfly and the 200m backstroke where she set a new Scottish record. Hannah is also sponsored by Aberdeen City and Shire.

Filippo Antoniazzi, Director of Sport, said, "With the focus on the Commonwealth Games later this year, and the 2012 Olympics, many of the future British Team are likely to be entering university and will be greatly aided by initiatives of this kind. In recent years the Programme has helped some of our scholars to national and international success, and Hannah is one of our greatest success stories.

"We now have a growing pool of young elite sportsmen and women who are recognising that we can provide the support and the facilities needed to equip them to compete on a world class stage."
Neil Brown, Sports Programmes Manager at RGU: SPORT, who co-ordinates the scholarship programme, added, "We are delighted to support Hannah in this way, as we feel it is a great opportunity to be part of her career. The Scholar programme has grown every year, meaning that RGU: SPORT can deliver a full range of services to the ever growing number of scholars studying at the University."
