PEOPLE in Aberdeenshire are to have the chance to walk their way to a healthier lifestyle with the help of local forest rangers.
Forestry Commission Scotland are set to launch their "10,000 Steps in the Woods" programme, a series of free walks arranged in conjunction with Aberdeenshire Council's Active Lifestyle Department. The two month long programme will begin on Wednesday,
September 5.
The weekly two-hour guided walks will be held in Aberdeen's Kirkhill Forest and Bennachie Forest near Chapel of Garioch. The walks are part of the Commission's national Active Woods campaign to encourage more people to enjoy activities in Scotland's woods and forests. Health experts agree that people should try to walk for at least 10,000 steps every day, approximately five miles based on an average length of stride, in order to remain fit and healthy.
There is no need to be super fit to take part, although the programme does feature an increase in distance every week, the emphasis firmly on encouraging an improvement in health and fitness gradually and will be easy on those not accustomed to walking regularly.
Everyone taking part will receive a free pedometer to allow them to monitor the number of paces they take at each event, and they will also help ensure that they get close to their target in everyday life.
Jackie Cumberbirch of Forestry Commission Scotland said: "The 10,000 Steps events are a great way for people to improve their fitness and to see how uncomplicated it can be to maintain their health.
"There's no simpler way to keep active than walking, and no better place to enjoy the outdoors than the peace an quiet of your local forest. I've been delighted to see people coming back to walk after 10,000 Steps has sparked their enthusiasm and I'm looking forward to introducing even more people to their local woodland with the new series of events."
The 10,000 Steps in the Woods programmes will take place every Wednesday in September, beginning on September 5, and run from 6pm to 8pm.
One event will take place at Bennachie Forest and will set of from the Bennachie Centre. The other event takes pace at Kirkhill Forest, Aberdeen and walkers should meet at the forest's car park. The events are free but places are limited, so booking in advance is advisable. Walkers should bring warm, waterproof clothing, suitable outdoor shoes or boots, and drinking water.
