The UK’s most successful gymnast has visited Inverurie to coach classes of aspiring youngsters.

Beth Tweddle tutored three different classes of 85 children - from the Inverurie Garioch Sports Centre club and all under 16 - and took a warm-up session and also taught a variety of basic gymnastics skills.

Following the training sessions at the Garioch Sports Centre last week, a lively question and answer session took place and the star gymnast was happy to pose for photographs and sign autographs.

Her impressive achievements include winning an Olympic bronze medal, becoming triple world champion, six-time European champion, Commonwealth champion and seven-time consecutive national champion.

Beth, 30, has retired from competitive gymnastics but remains heavily involved in coaching across the UK.

She was a popular winner of ITV’s Dancing on Ice show in 2013.

Graham Leith, partner at Johnston Carmichael’s Inverurie office who helped sponsor the event, said: “It was an absolute privilege to support this rare event, which offered local young people the opportunity to receive an exclusive coaching session from a world-recognised gymnast.

“It is highly encouraging that a sportsperson of Beth’s calibre, with so many achievements under her belt, took the time to share her skills and experience with the next generation of local sporting stars.”

Beth was invited to Inverurie by her friend Mark Wylie, who is activities manager at the Garioch Sports Centre.

Mark said: “The centre decided to organise her first visit to Aberdeenshire to give youngsters the opportunity to meet her and be inspired by the former world champion.

“At the end of each of the three specially-run sessions there were a lot of smiling faces with children and parents all enjoying the day with some great memories and photographs to take away.”

The centre continues to develop children’s activities with new recent additions including junior Olympians, junior running club, trampolining and pre-school Relax Kids.
