Élan Hair Design on Inverurie’s West High Street has received another accolade at a prestigious environmental awards ceremony held at the House of Lords.

The salon was runner-up for Exemplar Project in Scotland at the Environment Agency and Waterwise UK Water Efficiency Awards, which was held earlier this month at London’s City of Westminster location.

It has been a remarkable few months for the family behind the Inverurie salon who have won both the Scottish Green Champion award at the Green Apple Awards for Scotland and the Green Award at the HP Smart Business Awards. They have also been highly commended for their entry to the BusinessGreen Leaders Awards and been shortlisted for four others.

Owner Gordon Milton, who attended the event with wife Lorna, said: “We have to be pleased at coming so close to picking up top prize. It will make us even more determined in the future and we are already looking to add further green initiatives to our salon.”

Following a £250,000 investment in its West High Street salon, Élan has incorporated a multitude of environmentally-friendly initiatives including photovoltaic panels, an air-source heat pump and carbon-neutral furniture. The company also send customers’ hair to be used as compost.

Gordon continued: “We keep on looking to see how we can reduce the carbon footprint and reduce waste and we are encouraging other companies to also become more eco-friendly.

“Word has spread among the hairdressing community about what we have done and companies from other parts of the UK are visiting our salon to see what we have implemented here, because, as well as making sense generally, it also makes business sense. We harness technologies that are developing and the little things we implement make a huge difference when you group them together.”

Since adopting its new business approach, Élan has received, and been nominated for, a host of environmental awards. The company has been shortlisted for two awards at this year’s Scottish Green Awards – Best Green Small Company and the 20/20 Carbon Reduction Award. The ceremony takes place in Glasgow on October 4 and will be hosted by BBC newsreader Jackie Bird.

Additionally, Elan has been nominated in the green category for the Northern Star Business Awards. The ceremony, organised by the Aberdeen and Grampian Chamber of Commerce, takes place at the AECC on October 11.

Élan has also been announced as a finalist in the ICAEW Sustainability Category at the National Business Awards. The awards - run in partnership with mobile phone company Orange – will be held in London on November 13.

Owners Gordon and Lorna Milton run Élan Hair Design with their daughters Lanice and Lauren. The business, established more than 40 years ago, employs 14 staff.
