SINGER Fiona Kennedy and budding young performer, Ruairidh McDonald, joined in the celebrations at this year’s Scotland Week, (April 3 to 10) in New York, and the musical pair were kitted out in bespoke Harris Tweed outfits created by Scottish designers, Joyce Young By Storm and Gibbs Menswear Inverurie.
Following the success of Fiona Kennedy’s powerful musical production, “The Kist”, in Glasgow in 2012, Fiona is planning to tour Scotland later this year.
“The Kist” features songs from the ancient Gaelic tribal rhythms of the Islands to contemporary songs from artists such as Paulo Nutini.
Commenting Fiona, said, “I love being in New York during Scotland Week to celebrate the great connections Scotland has with North America.
“I will be donning my new Harris Tweed outfit and walking with pride alongside The American Scottish Foundation.
“The Tartan Day Parade is a wonderful and quite surreal event, with hundreds of pipers, drummers, 50 or more Scottie and West Highland Terrier dogs and, if we’re lucky, a Cherokee Chief.
“For a small country we can make a big noise! After all that excitement, there’s the party and we certainly know how to join in with that too!”
Barry Gibb of Gibbs Menswear Inverurie, said, “We usually design suits for gentlemen, but this was a real treat and delight to make a Harris Tweed suit for young Ruairidh to wear in New York, which reflects some of Scotland’s heritage, quality and true talent.”
Designer Joyce Young, added: “I’m thrilled that Fiona Kennedy is wearing one of our Harris Tweed coats from our new Tartan Spirit Collection during celebrations at this year’s Scotland Week.
“Tartan Spirit is a fashionable Scottish Collection made in our factory in Glasgow from Scotland’s finest traditional cloths Harris Tweed and wool tartan which promotes contemporary Scotland, which is what Scotland Week is all about.”
