Gold standard for Élan Hair Design

An Inverurie hair salon has achieved ‘Gold’ in the Service Industry category of the UK Green Apple Awards at the House of Commons last week.

Élan Hair Design fought off competition from across the UK to win the prestigious environmental award, and on the following evening missed out narrowly in the Nattional Business Awareds ICAEW Sustainability Award to retail giant, Marks and Spencer.

Elan has now won six industry awards and been nominated 19 times for honours. The business will find out later this month if it has been successful at the British Chamber of Commerce awards.

Lorna Milton, owner of Élan Hair Design, said: “Winning this award is a fantastic achievement for a small company from the Nnorth-east of Scotland. Credit has to go to all our team at Élan who have really embraced our eco-friendly business approach.

“It’s wonderful to be given recognition for all our hard work and this success will give us the confidence to add further green initiatives to the salon.”

The UK Green Apple accolade complements Élan’s achievement at the Scottish event in September – where the business was named Scottish Green Champion. As a result, the salon was automatically entered into the UK-wide awards.

The National Business Awards ceremony, run in partnership with mobile phone company Orange, was held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London. The awards were attended by 1,200 business leaders and entrepreneurs from across the UK.

Élan Hair Design has incorporated a multitude of environmentally-friendly initiatives following a £250,000 refurbishment of its West High Street salon. This includes the use of recyclable materials, photovoltaic panels to reduce electricity bills and solar thermal panels to provide energy for hot water. The salon even sends customers’ hair to be spread as compost on local farmers’ fields.

In addition to the Scottish and UK Green Apple Award wins, Élan collected the Green Award at the HP Smart Business Awards. Élan was also awarded Outstanding Green Initiative in the Global Business Excellence Awards and won the Excellence in Resource Management award for small businesses at the Scottish Waste and Resources Awards.

The business will represent Scotland in the final of the Chamber Awards, held by the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), after being announced as a regional winner. Élan is shortlisted in the sustainability category for the event at the Guildhall in London on Thursday, November 29 (2012).

Élan has also been shortlisted for two accolades at the VIBES Awards. The salon is a finalist in the Energy and Waste and Resource categories. The ceremony will also be held on Thursday, November 29 this year.

Husband and wife Gordon and Lorna Milton run Élan Hair Design with their daughters Lanice and Lauren. The business, which was established in 1971, currently has a team of 13.
