AN INVERURIE businessman has won a leading award at a fireworks competition in China.

Mark Copland impressed judges to land runner-up spot at the first international contest to be held in the city of Sanya.

Sanya is an emerging holiday destination and boasts some of the world’s top hotels.

Mark, who runs Fireworkx Scotland from Inverurie, was up against teams from China, Austria and France and put on a spectacular display through music and pyrotechnics.

He said: “The Chinese displays are slightly different in that you have to depict a story and you have to think of your audience and choose your music accordingly. We were representing the UK and selected music from different parts of the country.

“We had a bit of Riverdance, some bagpipe music and a bit of James Bond. It is a professional firework display choreographed to music.”

Mark added: “We were firing from six barges in the bay and would have gone through thousands of fireworks. We were proud to have been invited and were delighted to come second.

Mark’s team will be back in China later this month for the Changsha Orange Continent Weekends fireworks shows and China (Liuyang) Pyromusical competition. The event is on Saturday, February 25.
