Relief in sight for Inverurie

Hard-pressed businesses in Inverurie have been given a major boost with the prospect of the roadworks which have caused disruption in the town being completed ahead of schedule.

The High Street works began on January 16 and were due to last for four weeks - but developers Bancon have indicated that they could be finished on site sometime tomorrow (Friday) allowing the route to reopen then or possibly on Saturday.

Company chief executive Bill Beattie said: “ We were scheduled to work on site for four weeks but we are ahead of schedule. We anticipate completing on Friday (tomorrow) due to the crew working longer hours and working at weekends. The weather conditions have also been helpful.”

The road closure has been to allow sewerage and services to be installed at Bancon’s Knightsbridge development.

But the work has generated a lot of criticism in the town, at the start from frustrated motorists and then traders who have experienced a significant drop in business.

One of their main concerns was poor signage which failed to clarify that Inverurie was open for business, and also reports that the town was closed and traffic gridlocked.

IBA chairman Graeme Ross said the prospect of the road reopening ahead of schedule would be welcomed by businesses.

He added: “It’s been an extremely difficult time for traders and they are suffering, so the prospect of the work being completed early is good news.”

Cheryl Rowland of Donside Frames said it could not come quickly enough for her. She added: “Trade has been non-existent this week. This has been a really bad time.”

However, more roadworks are scheduled for the town centre later this month. West High St from the Square to Constitution Street will close for two weeks from February 13 for site works. Local diversions will be via Constitution Street and Burn Lane.
