Sir Alex Ferguson was in Old Meldrum last week at the official opening of a £4.5 million extension to a famous Inverurie hotel.

The former Aberdeen and Manchester United manager unveiled the new state-of-the-art development at Meldrum House.

The hotel completed the £4.5 million extension in June when in added 28 bedrooms, a boardroom to fit 10 delegates and a new ballroom for up to 200 people.

Bob Edwards, Director of Meldrum House, said: “We are delighted that Sir Alex was able to return to Meldrum House as he had opened our last development in 2009.

“It seemed fitting that he came back to see the expansion of the hotel and what we have achieved over the years.”

The original 13th century country house was first made into a hotel in the 1950s before being transformed to a four-star luxury retreat in 2009.

Sir Alex met with management and staff at Meldrum House before speaking at a VIP lunch and unveiling a plaque in the hotel’s new ballroom.

Sir Alex, said: “I love coming to Aberdeen. It is always nice to come back.

“The new wing at Meldrum House is really impressive and you have created something very special here for the north-east and it’s a fantastic achievement.”

Mr Edwards said: “What we have created at Meldrum House is unrivalled for the area and we plan to market the hotel and its new development as a luxury retreat and golf destination, all over the world.”

As part of the new development Meldrum House has extended and refurbished its 800 year-old Cave Bar and created a new dining room.

The hotel has won numerous awards over the years including the AA Hotel of the Year for Scotland in November 2014 and 2 Red Rosettes for its Dining Room.

Meldrum House also plans to launch its own Whisky Club later this year.

An 18-hole golf course surrounds the country estate and it has previously hosted the Aberdeen Masters championship.
