Colony U19s slump to defeat

WHAT a difference a week makes. Although Cove are a very good passing side, Colony Park U19s were a shadow of the side that defeated ‘A’ League opposition last week.

From the off, Cove created a good move up the left hand side which ended with them shooting wide.

A Cove clearance from a Colony corner found a Cove player on the half way line. He ran unchallenged right through on Ryan Gordon who did well to save the shot. Colony then worked the ball down the right and Nicol Binnie laid the ball back to Darren Coutts, who swung a good cross into the box which finding Euan Lawrie whose shot was parried away by the Cove keeper.

A Cove break on the right left Darren Coutts outnumbered by two Cove players, and when he went to cover one he played the ball to the spare man who shot past Ryan Gordon making it 1-0 Cove.

Colony then lost possession in the middle of the park and compounded the error by allowing the Cove player to stroll right through on goal and score unchallenged doubling their lead.

Shaun Reid then found Euan Lawrie who then sent Daniel Stalker through but he shot wide under pressure. A long ball by Cove caught the Colony back four square, the knock down found the Cove number 4 in acres of space and his shot was well saved by Ryan Gordon.

Colony again lost the ball on the half way line and Cove broke down the left. He made his way into the box and squared the ball to a colleague who stroked the ball home for 3-0.

Before half time Cove again won the ball in their own half and ran through unchallenged again to stroke the ball past a helpless Ryan Gordon to make it 4-0.

Cove started the second half the brighter side but Colony broke down the left with Euan Lawrie and Daniel Stalker and the move ended with a corner. From the corner Stalker’s shot was blocked.

A Colony corner from the right was palmed clear by the Cove keeper only as far as Craig Smith but his shot was blocked on the line. The rebound fell to Euan Lawrie but his drive was also blocked on the line.

Cove then regrouped and broke up the park. Poor defending by Colony allowed the Cove number 9 to square the ball into the middle for a simple tap in making it 5-0.

Colony then replaced Ryan Gordon, Mark Soutar and Darren Coutts with Shaun Ramage, Jack Morgan and Lee Addison.

What followed was a better spell of football by Colony. A good Cove break down the right hand side, ended with the cross being cleared by Gavin Chandler for a corner. From the resulting corner a Cove player rose above everybody to head unchallenged but the header was cleared off the line by Shaun Reid at the post. A Cove break was thwarted when Shaun Ramage came smartly off his line to block the ball.

Near the end Cove then won the ball 25 yards out and after a quick interchange sent a player through to score their sixth.

Cove were a good side, however Colony could have been two up before Cove scored. The level of commitment and togetherness shown last week against Huntly will need to be repeated week in week before they will become a force to be reckoned with.
