Detectives investigating the brutal murder of Rothienorman man Brian McKandie have widened their hunt for the killer.

It is nearly three weeks since the 67-year-old handyman was found dead at his home on the outskirts of the village.

Officers are now extending their investigation to other parts of Aberdeenshire and also Aberdeen.

Mr McKandie was discovered at Fairview Cottages, Badenscoth, north of Rothienorman, on Saturday, March 12.

Police believe he was murdered the day before with a heavy weapon.

More than 700 motorists were questioned as part of the probe in an operation at the end of last week.

Detective Chief Inspector Iain Smith said: “Officers spent much of last Friday speaking to people travelling in the area.

“Information was received from a number of people in terms of assisting us with our enquiries to identify people who may have been in contact with him before he died.
