Local secondaries excel in latest performance indicators

LOCAL secondary schools have reason to celebrate, after the latest government performance tables showed that schools in Garioch and Formartine are generally performing ahead of shire-wide and national averages in a range of areas.

The figures - taken from the Scottish Government’s regulatory body Learning and Teaching Scotland - indicate generally high levels of attainment across the board at the secondaries in question.

50% of all S5 pupils at Inverurie Academy went on to achieve one or more Highers in 2010, with 33% achieving three or more - well above the Scottish average of 43% and 24% respectively. 14% of Inverurie S5s achieved 5 Highers by the end of their fifth year, with the figures at 10% for Meldrum, 13% for Kemnay and 9% for Ellon, compared to a Scottish average of 11%.

Meanwhile, Ellon Academy’s strengths in sixth year were demonstrated by the fact that 27% of sixth years had achieved 5 Highers or more, against a Scottish average of 22%, while Kemnay Academy could boast 33% of pupils with 5 or more Credit Standard Grades against a Scottish average of 35%.

A spokesperson for Aberdeenshire Council said: “In Aberdeenshire, the overall pass rate at Standard Grade Credit Level has improved by 3% to 51%. It is very encouraging to see improvements in pass rates not just at Standard Grade level but across the board. These continue to demonstrate the high levels of achievement in national qualifications in Aberdeenshire and we would like to congratulate young people and their teachers across Aberdeenshire on this achievement.” Additional figures are available on http://www.ltscotland.org.uk/scottishschoolsonline/index.asp Percentage of the S4 year group achieving five or more awards at SCQF Level 5 (Standard Grade Credit level or equivalent) or better
