FiRST Minister Alex Salmond visited Meldrum Academy on Monday to show his support for the Lab in a Lorry science initiative.

The mobile science laboratory tours schools across the country with the aim of encouraging more pupils to take a greater interest in science subjects.

The project, which receives annual funding of £25,000 from the Scottish Government, seeks to engage pupils with a variety of fun experiments.

The programme forms part of the Curriculum for Excellence and is staffed by practicing engineers and scientists in order to provide the pupils with information of science in practice, and not just in the classroom.

The Aberdeenshire East MSP spent time with pupils in the mobile lab carrying out experiments and was full of praise for the programme.

Mr Salmond said: “Programmes like this one play an important role in encouraging youngsters to study science subjects and pursue technical careers.

“Scotland has a proud tradition of invention and discovery and we want to do all we can to inspire the next generation of innovators. I have no doubt that it will help these young people decide upon their academic path and future careers.”
