One of the most popular exhibits at last week’s Taste of Grampian was the Educational Marquee with hundreds of young “foodies” attending on the day.

Learners of all ages visited farming co-operative ANM Group’s children’s educational tent to become more familiar with the field-to-fork journey and get creative.

A variety of demonstrati0ns with food-writer Liz Ashworth and her team from Hamlyns Oats, a silver sponsor of Taste of Grampian, gave the children the chance to bake, learn and have fun mastering making their own biscuits, ‘take and shake’ muesli and mackerel pate.

Liz Ashworth said: “The marquee was extremely successful again this year; it was the biggest and best it has ever been at the festival. The demonstrations were hugely popular; families really rolled up their sleeves and got involved and enjoyed themselves throughout the day.

As well as the baking activities, several goats; Shetland ponies; lambs; and chickens, kindly donated for the day by several local farms, the Scottish Goat Meat Company and the ANM Group, proved a massive hit with the families. Likewise, Ed Fletcher of Granite City Fish delivered a ‘touchy feely fish’ demonstration for families from the fish market.

The marquee, assisted by Kintore Childminding Group volunteers, also offered a soft play area and activity corner to draw and colour in farmyard favourites and never saw a quiet moment during the day. Farm-themed toys and activities were also supplied by the North East Showing Forum and Royal Highland Education Trust. A life-size milking cow to teach about where milk comes from and a smoothie-blending bike, with strawberries donated by local producer Barra Berries, demonstrated how easy it is to make a healthy fruit and milk-based drink.

John Gregor, Chairman of Taste of Grampian and Executive Director of the ANM Group said: “The children’s educational marquee has been a popular attraction at the festival for many years and provides the perfect opportunity for young people to learn about where their food comes from and how it ends up on their plates. It’s great to see so many children coming to the tent and so many families getting involved in the activities and understanding more fully what the region has to offer.”
