Rotary club member Audrey Gartly said that this year’s shoeboxes will be sent to orphanages and old folks homes in Eastern Europe. Audrey, who also works as assistant manager at the British Red Cross shop in Ellon, told the Times that the appeal did very well last year.

She said: “We received around 250 boxes last year. Boxes are filled with items and people circle whether the box is suitable for ‘household’, ‘toys’, ‘teenager’, ‘boys’ or ‘girls’

“All I say to people is to think about a present that they received last Christmas - if it is something you would like - people over there will.”

Food, equipment with batteries or electrical items cannot be accepted. Used items can be donated as long as they are in clean working order and have all parts intact. People can get a shoebox from Audrey at the British Red Cross Shop, Costcutters or Catwalkers. They need to be returned before November 24.

There will also be a collections box at the British Red Cross Shop where people can drop off individual items rather than fill a shoe box. Baby clothes, toys, make-up and toiletries are examples of the items which can be donated.

Audrey added: “People can also include a card in their shoe box with their name, address and even a picture.”
