Ellon Royal British Legion Pipe Band 40th Birthday

It was a night of nostalgia when Ellon and District Royal British Legion Pipe Band held their 40th anniversary celebration.

More than 100 old and new faces, and members of the public, attended the recent reunion in the Station Hotel.

Drew Robertson, who has been with the band since it was formed in 1974, and Mandy Annand, who has a 30-year connection with it, were both presented with life-time achievement awards.

The pipe band itself opened the party and then Revival filled the dance floor for the rest of the evening.

The band’s first pipe major was Douglas Findlater, who retired in 1977, and Drew Robertson took over the role.

He continued until 2007, when he stepped down, and pipe major Stuart Robertson took over.

Stuart is currently one of the youngest pipe majors in Scotland at 21.

The band are a popular attraction at many local events and competitions, including the Braemar Gathering. Members have also played further afield, including Belgium.

A highlight for the band was playing at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

Meanwhile, officials are looking for a tenor drummer, so if you would like to learn, or are already experienced in playing the tenor drum and would like to join the band, call 07928 969846.
