An Inverurie hairdresser is the first to brush up on environmental matters and recycle waste hair from their salon floor for compost.

Elan Hair design has partnered with Keenan Recycling (New Deer), which transforms food and garden waste into BSI accredited compost. The company has just introduced hair as a new item that can be composted at their state-of-the-art facility.

The firm deals with tens of thousands of tonnes of food and green waste from businesses and local authorities across Scotland. The compost produced from the waste is used on gardens and crops by local businesses and farmers.

The company operates a commercial food waste collection service across the North-east and Moray helping businesses to reach recycling targets and it reduces the amount of waste going to landfill.

The service is now being rolled out to the hairdressing industry.

Director of Keenan Recycling, Grant Keenan, explains: “Human hair has a high nitrogen level, which is proven to help plants thrive, therefore adding it to the recycling process leads to an increase in slow release nitrogen in the compost, which helps to maintain an even and rich growth. Opening up the commercial food waste service to hairdressers adds another dimension to the compost that we produce.”

Elan Hair Design in Inverurie is the first salon to use the service in a bid to cut their waste to landfill.

Director of Elan Hair Design, Lorna Milton, said: “We are delighted to be the first hairdresser to sign up to this initiative. We’ve recently made a series of eco-friendly changes to the business from using solar panels and carbon neutral furniture to energy-saving lighting and environmentally-friendly hairdressing products.

“Now our disposed materials are being re-used thanks to the service provided by Keenan Recycling. The compost initiative is very much in-keeping with the ethos at Elan Hair Design.”

Keenan Recycling was launched in 2001, the company recycles both food and garden waste from Aberdeen City Council and Moray Council and currently only garden waste from Aberdeenshire Council. In 2012/13 Keenan Recycling is set to expand its services into other areas, including Dundee.
