RESIDENTS across the north-east were left baffled on Sunday by a spectacular rainbow coloured cloud in the sky above the region.

Dozens took photographs of the strange phenomenon, which weather experts have described as a nacreous cloud caused by chemical reactions between methane and ozone in the upper atmosphere. The phenomenon is uncommon outside of polar regions.
