Alzheimer Scotland and Dementia Friends held an event in Better Read Books in Ellon on Tuesday, June 23, to raise awareness of the condition.
Kirsteen Heneghan, from Dementia Friends, spoke at the interactive session which lasted just over an hour and was well received by those attending.
She gave informative and practical advice on dementia, stressing the need for raising awareness in the community and the importance of a friendly approach to those with the condition.
Key messages were that dementia is not a natural part of ageing but caused by diseases of the brain. It is not just about losing memory, there is more to the person than dementia, and that it is possible to live well with dementia.
The session ended with a resume of the help available and an invitation to sign up as a Dementia Friend.
Dementia Friends is a social action movement where more is learned about the condition and how people can help.
Anouk Kahanov made the attendees aware of a variety of ‘Dementia’ Cafe sessions being held in venues like the Buchan Hotel Ellon, The Fly Cup in Inverurie, The Bistro Alford and Lochter in Oldmeldrum.
