Funding awarded to Newmachar project

AMBITIOUS plans for a brand new sports and community facility in Newmachar took a step nearer after receiving a commitment £200,000 from LEADER Funding.

The plans would see a modern multi-purpose community centre to replace the old hall. The facility will feature a sports hall, community café, youth facility and multi-purpose rooms that could be used by various community groups. The community driven project is aimed a providing facilities that residents have to travel to access in Newmachar itself which has a growing population. The new facility is expected to cost in the region of £1,140,000 to complete.

Commenting Graham Geddes, Chairman of the Newmachar Community Hall Association, said, “Newmachar Community Hall Association is delighted that LEADER has made such a significant contribution towards a project that will benefit the wider community and address key needs in one of Aberdeenshire’s fastest growing areas.

“We have been inspired by the support from the local community for a facility that is desperately needed and the LEADER grant makes a huge contribution towards the funds required to make this project a reality. We would like to express our thanks to LEADER for sharing our vision for a new community centre for Newmachar and for proving this practical support.”

Belinda Miller, Rural Aberdeenshire LAG Chairperson said, “the latest round of LEADER funded projects exemplifies the breadth of impact which the programme delivers. LEASER is supporting a strategic community facility in development at Newmachar, a rural community that has undergone significant expansion in recent years.”

Vicky Thomson, LEADER Coordinator added, “ Once again the LAG has supported a wide variety of great projects that will make a difference in communities across Aberdeenshire.

“It is particularly encouraging to see the professional approach by applicants in working up applications which result in high quality projects for the benefit of local communities. LEADER provides the leverage for these projects to attract public and private sector funding from a wide range of sources.”
