Fundraisers planned for playpark equipment

MILLBANK and Tillyfourie Playing Field Committee are holding a Family Bingo Night on Saturday, April 28, at 7pm in Millbank Hall, Sauchen.

This evening is a first in a series of fundraising events for the park, whose play equipment has been shut for the last two years.

“The playing field is a hub for the community as we have an excellent Bowling Club and Tennis Court on the site. Our pitch is regularly used by Donside FC for matches.” said Anna Allan, chair of the current committee.

“It is sad that we had to close our play equipment but in the last two years there were just not enough funds to cover the costs of modernisation and insurance. The swings, chute and merry-go-round were well used by local children, spectators and children attending playgroup / nursery in the former school next door. Regrettably the council shut that facility last year to cut costs.”

The playing field was first leased to the community in the 1950’s by Cluny Estate. Anna added, “Many neighbours helped lay out the football / rugby pitch and the Bowling Green. The local Gala was a big event with white tents and a football tournament for teams from schools all over the region. The late Jimmy Smith was a legendary chairperson through that time and thanks to him and his committee the playing field was really at the heart of our community.”

The new committee is dedicated to renewing the park’s appeal. “This is a “no-brainer”. We have to preserve this facility and make it safe and fun for kids, especially with the increase in children growing up around here and more houses planned for construction. But we also want to have a bit of fun, so after the Bingo we will host a Race-night on May 19th and a bonfire and barbecue in autumn.”

Entry for the Bingo Night will be £1 at the door, and Bingo Books will also be £1. please bring your own drinks and snacks.
