A young horserider received a warm welcome in Ellon when she returned from the Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles with three equestrian medals.

Charlotte MacDonald, from Whitecairns, was the only North-east representative in Team GB and she visited Ellon Resource Centre last Friday to proudly display her medals.

She won gold in the Equestrian English Equitation and silver in the Dressage and the Working Trails events.

Charlotte has been attending the resource centre since June, 2012. Staff describe her as “a very sporty and motivated young lady with a particular passion for horse riding”.

Before going to Los Angeles, she said she wanted to raise awareness of the Special Olympics.

Aberdeenshire Provost Hamish Vernal congratulated the young rider on her success, describing it as “an amazing achievement”.

He said: “I hope her success will inspire more people to take up sport in Aberdeenshire.”

Everyone at the centre followed Charlotte’s progress and received daily updates. Many congratulatory messages were left on its Facebook page.
