An Ellon man is planning a charity golfing marathon in memory of his fiancee’s mother.

Offshore worker William Wood will today (Friday) attempt to play 100 holes at Cruden Bay in support of the Friends of Roxburghe House Grampian.

It will be a long day on the course, I just hope the weather stays nice

His fiancee Jennifer’s late mother was cared for in Roxburghe House, the specialist palliative care unit in Aberdeen.

Lynn McLeay, 51, died in September, 2012, from a rare form of cancer.

William, 30, promised her he would undertake a charity fundraising event in her memory.

And tomorrow he will face the daunting task of completing 100 holes to fulfil his pledge.

William, a member at Cruden Bay, said: “I plan to tee off at 4am in the morning, and I have worked out, that all going well, I should have completed the 100 holes by 9.30pm.

“It will be a long day on the course, I just hope the weather stays nice.”

He has thanked everyone who has donated so far.

William added: “I am overwhelmed by the response and the amount raised. Any further donations would be greatly appreciated, it would mean a lot to me and Jennifer’s family.”

Jennifer, who works with an oil service company and is a former Ellon Times reporter, said her mother’s final days were spent at Roxburghe House and the care and attention she received was second to none.

She added: “I’m extremely proud of William for seeing through his promise to my mum and completing a charity fundraiser in her memory.

“100 holes of golf in one day is a tough challenge, but I know he can do it and I know that mum will be looking down on the day rooting for him. She would be extremely proud of his efforts.”

William, from Cruden Bay, will have plenty of support. Family and friends will accompany him round the course, providing food and water to keep up his stamina.
