A GARDEN at Inverurie Hospital has received a much needed face lift thanks to a fundraising drive initiated by one of the nurses working at the hospital.

The Ashgrove Ward garden in the hospital grounds was created some years ago but over the last year, despite attempts to keep the garden maintained and under control by their good friends, local mental health charity, Comraich, patients and staff felt it was looking a bit “tired”. It was agreed that the garden was in need of re-vitalisation.

Nurse Phylis Milne spearheaded a fundraising campaign to have the garden upgraded, and with the help of the Friends of Inverurie Hospital, Inverurie Lions and Inverurie Rotary Club it has been possible to transform it and make it more accessible for all.

Senior Charge Nurse Sylvia Fraser explained: “Phylis organised a Table Top sale, a Fashion Show and a sponsored Abseil to raise funds to put in new planters, pergolas and arbours but most importantly of all, we have replaced our grass pathway and have introduced a paved path which will allow those confined to wheelchairs greater access to the garden.”

At the official opening of the re-vitalised garden, Chairman of The Friends of Inverurie Hospital, Pat Walker said: “Over the last few months a range of volunteers have been making improvements to the garden and we would like to thank Inverurie Rotary and The Lions Club for their ongoing support, but especially all those who have raised funds to make the transformation possible including Staff Nurse Julie Scott and other staff and volunteers who took part in the sponsored abseil as well as other events”.
