A NEW flag has been hoisted at the National Trust for Scotland property, Castle Fraser

The new flag is a saltire, embellished with thistles and a castle on a hill and depicts the National Trust for Scotland’s coat of arms, discovered by Property Manager Christina Low in the charity’s 1950 annual report.

She explained: “I was looking for a new flag to fly at Castle Fraser – something which would remind people that the castle is cared or and conserved by the National Trust for Scotland. A colleague who is keen on heraldry mentioned that the Trust has its own coat of arms, so I managed to track it down with some research.

“The flag has been attracting attention from visitors, who are keen to know more about its unusual design and what it symbolises.”

Castle Fraser is one of the grandest of the Scottish baronial tower houses. Begun in 1575, the present castle contains an impressive Great Hall, fine furniture and many Fraser family portraits.

Those with an interest in heraldry and medieval history will enjoy the spectacle of the Castle Fraser Jousting Tournament which takes place on 21 and 22 July. Advance tickets at special rates are now available online at www.nts.org.uk/events. They cost £8.50 for adults, £6 for children and concessions and £23 for a family.
