Committee defer tearoom development

A PLANNING application to change the use of a house on North Street, Inverurie to a Tea Room, was deferred by members of the Garioch Area Committee to allow them to visit the site prior to making a decision.

The application by Mr and Mrs Mitchell of Inverurie, that would see the one a half storey traditional cottage “Strathlene” converted to a Tea Room with onsite parking for six cars along with one disabled parking space in the lay-by situated in front of the house. The application proposed that the hours of business would be 9.30am – 4.30pm Monday to Friday and 9.30am – 7pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Inverurie and District Councillors Martin Kitts-Hayes and Richard Cowling requested that the application, that was recommended for approval by the Council’s Planning Department, be discussed at the committee to judge the appropriateness of the application in a residential area; whether it “respects the character and amenity” of the area and the fact the lay-by had previously been restricted for public access to due excess noise.

The application had generated three letters of representation raising concerns including; noise and waste nuisance; health and hygiene from industrial scale waste; increased traffic and the later opening hours on Saturday and Sunday.

The Committee agreed to hear from Mrs Alison Gray, a resident from a neighbouring property, who is amongst the objectors to the proposals. Mrs Gray outlined her objections to the Commitee.
