Ellon rally driver Stevie Brown’s race in last weekend’s Granite City event did not go according to plan.

Stevie and co-driver Jack Morton encountered thick fog and then slid off the road into marshland, where they were stuck for eight costly minutes.

The Stagecoach Bluebird backed pair battled to finish in 71st place in their Ford Fiesta ST.

A total of 116 teams from across the UK lined up for the start of the third round of the ARR Craib Scottish Rally Championship on Saturday. It proved to be one of the most difficult in the series in recent years.

Stevie said: “We couldn’t see much further than the end of the bonnet in the opening stage the fog was that bad.”

The team made a good start to stage two with the mist lifting but midway through they slid off the track and into a marsh, forcing them down the leaderboard.

Stevie, a winner of the Colin McRae tribute award, added: “When you see the result in black and white it’s not that great, but when you consider the problems we’ve overcome, we’ve done very well to get to the finish of the rally.

“Everyone in the team has done a fantastic job with a new car in very difficult conditions and we’re looking forward to the next event.”
