Pupils from Strathburn Primary lauch their Fairtrade Treasure Hunt

PUPILS from Strathburn Primary School have set up a Fairtrade Treasue Hunt around Inverurie to mark Fairtrade Fortnight, which runs from February 24 to March 9.

The school’s Fairtrade Committee have organised the Fairtrade Treasure Hunt with the support of Anne Groves and Nora Radcliffe.

A Firtrade item will be hidden in some of the shop windows in the town during Fairtrade Fortnight, and local children are encouraged to hunt for these items and complete a Treasure Hunt form. The winners of different age categories will receive a £25 UBUNTU voucher, (UBUNTU is the Fairtrade retail outlet in The Acorn Centre, Inverurie), and the Treasure Hunt forms should be returned to UBUNTU by Tuesday, March 11.

Paper copies of Treasure Hunt form can be collected from UBUNTU.

• Also in support of Fairtrade Fortnight a special stall has been set up in the Acorn Centre highlighting the campaign for a fair deal for banana producers from UK supermarkets.

“Foncho’s Stall” is named after Foncho, a banana farmer from Columbia, who has travelled to the UK to ask Vince Cable, Secretary of Stat for Business, to investigate unfair supermarket pricing practices, and to act to protect producers of one of our favourite fruits.

In the UK we eat five billion bananas every year, which is worth £550 million. But not everyone is enjoying the benefits. Over the past ten years, the typical price of a banana in the UK has nearly halved, whilst the cost of production has doubled. Many banana farmers and workers can’t always afford to feed their families or provide the basics such as education and healthcare.

If you would like to find out more or sign a postcard to be delivered to Vince Cable, why not visit Foncho’s stall in the Acorn Centre, West High Street, Inverurie. There might even be some tasty banana treats to sample!
