Fetternear estate memories appeal

LOCAL people are being asked to provide their input on the history of an Aberdeenshire estate.
Researchers have appealed for information relating to Fetternear, which was the scene of a major 16-year archaeological excavation, which ended last year.
Since 1995, fieldwork at Fetternear has included the excavation and landscape survey of the medieval bishop’s palace and the post-medieval mansion as part of the Scottish Episcopal Palaces Project. The aim of the project is to study the residences of the medieval bishops in Scotland.
The dig became one of the longest and most important in the country.
Liverpool University archaeologist Jonathan Trigg took part in the exploration at the lost Bishop’s Palace and helped unearth significant disoveries near the ruins of Fetternear House.
He is part of a Fetternear Research Project team and is appealing to local people to provide any memories they may have of life on the estate.
Mr Trigg said they would welcome any reminiscenes from people.
He added: “We would like to hear from anyone who had relatives who worked on the estate. Photographs, diaries or documents would all help.”
The team is currently analysing and listing all findings during the excavation and would like local recollections to fit into the overall history of the estate. It is planned to publish two books.
