Garioch host Sports Awards

THE Aberdeenshire Sports Council Sports Awards Evening was held at The Venue, Garioch Sports Centre, Inverurie on Friday(March 8).

Over 190 people attended the popular annual awards evening and this year the guest of honour was Tim Baillie MBE from Westhill, the 2012 Olympic C2 Canoeing gold medalist.

Tim received a Special Achievement award from the sports council. The parents of Neil Fachie the Paralympic gold medalist in cycling also collected another special award.

The evening was a way of rewarding and acknowledging local sports people in Aberdeenshire for their commitment to and / or achievement in sport during 2012 (or in the case of the Service to Sport category over many years). Over 50 nominations were received or this year’s awards. All nominees received a certificate to recognise their contribution to sport.

In the post Olympic Year it was a great opportunity for clubs and other organisations to recognise the sports talent in their midst, to give local sports people and volunteers the acknowledgement they deserve, and also to show the wealth of sporting talent which is evident in the area.

Amongst the winners on the night were: Young Male - Jason Banks, Inverurie bowls; Team of the Year Award- Kintore Golf Club- Mail on Sunday team and Outstanding Achievement- Kerry Mathers, Inverurie Athletics Race Running.

Amongst those Highly Commended were: Young Female Sports Award, Helen Forbes of Garioch Judo Club; Team of the Year Award, Grampian Junior Bowling Association; Club of the Year Award, Garioch Gymnastics Club and Inverurie Gymnastics.
