INVERURIE resident and dedicated charity suppoter Mike Barron received an unexpected Christmas gift when he scooped a brand new car in a fundraiser in aid of a good cause close to his heart.

Mike is the lucky winner of the Mini which was the star prize in a raffle which boosted CLAN Cancer Support coffers by thousands to end 2012 on a high.

The annual event is organised by a group of 22 North-east Rotary clubs and for the past five years it has played a part in CLAN’s fundraising effort. The star prize was sponsored by energy company TAQA Bratani to ensure every penny raised through selling tickets went to charity.

When the draw was made on Christmas eve, Mike was on the other side of the world in New Zealand - unaware of his good fortune.

Mike who is a member of Inverurie Rotary Club, has been a keen supporter of CLAN over the years and has taken part in various events to generating funds for the charity - personally raising £1,500 three years ago during the appeal to meet the costs of the new CLAN House.

He said: “Our family has had connections with cancer charities both in Scotland and in New Zealand. Our reason for being at Tauranga in New Zealand over the festive period was to be company for our daughter, who lost her husband in January 2012 after four years of deteriorating ill health through cancer.

“Our-son-law’s New Zealand outreach care, from a similar charity to CLAN, was of the highest order prior to and immediately after his early death at 41 years of age. The support was tremendous.

“My wife too had breast cancer some 17 years ago and is meantime free of any problems. As a family we are indebted to organisations involved with cancer.”

The handover of the prize was delayed until Mike landed back in Scotland from New Zealand.
