Changes to parking in Ellon and other towns in the North-east were approved by the Infrastructure Services Committee on Thursday.
It followed extensive consultation across the area.
The changes were welcomed by Ellon and District Councillor Gillian Owen.
She said: “I have always been in favour of some form of free period for shoppers and I believe the introduction of a 30-minute period without charge will be of great benefit to Ellon.
“I made a pledge in my election manifesto to campaign for changes and I am delighted that sense has at last prevailed.”
Councillor Owen added: “I am also pleased to see the introduction of electric vehicle charging points. Spaces will be allocated for the exclusive use of electric vehicles or hybrids that require recharging.
“Market Street Car Park is one such place. This is an innovative move by the council and I look forward to more being installed when Phase 2 of the Park and Ride changes are completed.”
