Inverurie Academy staff and pupils prepare to set off for Newcastle.

LAST Saturday, (February 2) saw 75 Inverurie Academy pupils make a trip to Newcastle to take in Newcastle United’s match with current European Champions Chelsea.

Organiser of the trip was guidance teacher Graham Hepburn, who was accompanied by four teachers taking two coach loads of pupils to the home of Newcastle United, the famous St James’ Park for what turned out to be one of the most exciting matches of the season in England so far.

There was bit of concern for all involved when the coaches had not arrived for the 7am departure, but a quick call to the bus company established that they were merely delayed having been caught out by the overnight snowfall.

One of the schools senior football players Mikey Watson said, “The experience was incredibly worthwhile despite the early start. Overall the trip was a great success especially for me being a Newcastle fan and the score and performance really pleased me.

“The organisation of the day was brilliant, and being able to spend a day with teachers had never been looked at in such a positive way.

“The school also arranged for me to be dropped off in Edinburgh so that I could stay over for the Hibs v Aberdeen Cup match on Sunday, needless to say that didn’t quite have the same excitement or enjoyment!”

S1 pupil Callum Taylor was equally delighted with the trip saying, “The trip was really good. The game was exciting and seeing the likes of Lampard, Torres, Mata, Sissoko and Coloccini live was amazing!

“It was good of the teachers to give up their Saturday to take us - it would be good if we could do something like that again.”

Newcastle won the match 3-2 coming from behind to beat Chelsea, with Newcastle’s new signing Moussa Sissoko scoring twice on his home debut.
