The owner of Tertowie House, Kinellar, has lodged plans to restore the mansion, which was damaged by fire last November.

A MOVE is underway to rebuild a historic Aberdeenshire mansion which was seriously damaged by fire.

Part of 16th century Tertowie House, near Kinellar, was destroyed in a spectacular blaze towards the end of November last year.

The owner is now seeking the go-ahead to restore the building to its former glory.

Forty firefighters fought to control the outbreak at the B-listed former residential school, which houses a Cold War nuclear bunker.

Crews managed to confine the fire to a wing of the mansion following a seven-hour battle on November 28. It was later established there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the fire.

Smoke and flames could be seen for miles as the blaze broke through the roof of the baronial-style house.

The operation was hampered by difficulties in securing enough water. Two water carriers, one from Buckie and another from Stonehaven, were called in to increase supplies. They used a hydrant at nearby Clinterty.

The fierce blaze made it unsafe for firefighters to enter but they managed to prevent it from spreading to other parts of the building.

Plans have been lodged with Aberdeenshire Council for full planning and listed building permission for partial demolition and alterations to the mansion.

The underground bunker at Tertowie was created in 1962 and was used until 1968 with the aim of providing a safe haven for councillors and officials in times of national emergency, or a nuclear disaster at the height of the Cold War. It was renovated in the 1980s and was finally closed down in 1998, with the house being put up for sale a few years later.
