The William Hill Scottish Cup adventure is over again for Inverurie Locos but they were never outplayed by Peterhead at any stage of this third round tie. However,it’s the Blue Toon who face a glamorous home tie with Celtic in the next round.

The players and management can hold their heads high. Despite the scoreline, this was a performance of which their supporters and sponsors in a massive 998 crowd can be proud. A terrific end to end tie but ultimately it was the home failing again this term, giving away silly goals, which hindered progress.

It was a fairly even opening but it turned into a nightmare five minutes for Locos as they slumped to two goals down. Jamie Redman wriggled his way through a ruck of players but with the ball running away, Keith Thomson slammed it up against him and the ball spun past Reid into the net.

Worse was to follow midway through the half. Deasley’s corner from the right, Martin Bavidge capitalising after Rory McAllister’s first shot was saved by Reid.

A massive boost was needed and it came within a couple of minutes. John Maitland’s corner from the left went to the back post where Steven Park forced the ball home in a scramble after an initial header.

Disaster again a minute from the interval. Again it was a Deasley right side corner, Martin Bavidge rose to flick the ball on to the back post, into the path of Callum McDonald, who netted from close range.

In the second half, Locos were to once again reduce the deficit to a single goal after a well-crafted finish from Neil McLean. Trying to catch out the Peterhead defence, a quick corner from Maitland to Ross was swung into the box. McLean scooped the ball up with his right foot before setting up a half volley on his left.

An equaliser was coming but a cruel twist saw Rory McAllister score a cheeky free kick to restore the two goal advantage. With McAllister and Deasley standing over the ball tight to the by line on the far left wing, the former Brechin City player swung the ball across the goal and into the far top right corner.
