A former special adviser to Alex Salmond has announced she is seeking the SNP nomination for the Aberdeenshire East constituency.

Jennifer Dempsie, 33, currently works as a media columnist and public relations consultant.

The former First Minister will stand down at Holyrood next year after winning the Gordon seat in May’s Westminster election.

Ms Dempsie helped run several election campaigns, was public relations manager for the pro-independence Yes campaign in the run-up to last year’s referendum, and is a former associate director at global communications agency Weber Shandwick.

The political hopeful, who was a special adviser to Mr Salmond when he was First Minister, says her former boss would be a tough act to follow if she becomes a candidate.

She said: “Alex Salmond will be greatly missed in the Scottish Parliament. He has served his constituents with passion and diligence both as their MSP and as First Minister, which he is of course continuing for them at Westminster.

“If selected as candidate, I would want to run a positive campaign for progressive politics to re-elect an SNP government to continue the job of working hard for the people of Scotland and, importantly, for the people of the North-east.

“My priority would be to roll up my sleeves for everyone across Aberdeenshire East campaigning for the best educational and work opportunities by protecting traditional and promoting new industries, ensuring the local economy is connected with strong transport links, tackling inequality, protecting our NHS and vital public services, as well as the vulnerable who are being hit hard by the Tories’ continued austerity.”
