AT their last meeting, members of the Rotary Club of Kintore welcomed Gary Laing, Training Manager with Buchan Dial a Community Bus to their weekly meeting at the Thainstone House Hotel on Thursday, August 18.

Gary explained that the charity, which is based in Maud, had been in existence for 15 years and had evolved into a major transport provider in the Buchan area, providing schools, shopping and youth services together with patient and evening transport. Earlier this year the service was awarded the accolade of the Best Rural Community Transport Operator in the UK. In 2009/2010, the service provided over 50,000 passenger journeys using six minibuses, an MPV and a volunteer community car scheme.

An independent subsidiary community interest company, DAB Plus, was formed in 2006 and provides a range of driver training courses to other charities and organisations in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire.

Members also heard that the organisation was interested in recruiting volunteer drivers and needed to constantly fundraise in order to sustain its operations.

Following his talk, Kintore Rotarian Mike Kelman thanked Gary for taking the time to give members a most informative insight into the work of the organisation.

The Rotary Club of Kintore was formed in April, 2007. Members say their time so far in Rotary has been extremely enjoyable, fulfilling, and eventful!

The club is keen to expand their membership to allow them to better achieve their goals. As a member of Rotary, there are real opportunities to improve the lives of others and, collectively, make a real difference to those most in need.

Kintore Rotary is part of the largest charitable and service organisation in the world but they never forget to have fun in the process, whether they are raising money for good causes or working with other Rotary Clubs in the North-east on joint ventures and larger fund raising projects.

The Club meets at the Thainstone House Hotel on Thursday evenings at 7 pm for 7.30 pm. Everyone is invited to come along to see at first hand what they are currently involved in and will be made most welcome by their members.
