The build-up to Run Garioch 2015 got off to a flying start on Monday, (October 6) with a launch at Inverurie’s Garioch Sports Centre.
The Provost of Aberdeenshire Jill Webster, Aberdeenshire Councillor Richard Cowling, Garioch Sports Hub Chair Trevor Hart, jogscotland Programme Co-ordinator Ann Davidson, and representatives from the main sponsors were joined by dozens of special guests to start the countdown to the popular local event.
Monday’s launch was also the beginning of celebrations for next year’s 10th anniversary of the ‘Garioch 10k’ – the event from which today’s Run Garioch grew.
Race Director Eric Simpson told the audience, “We’ve come a long way since the days of the ‘Garioch 10k’ in 2006. Since then, over 8000 runners have completed the 10k alone, and hundreds more have enjoyed the 5k and Half-Marathon courses we launched when Run Garioch was created in 2011.”
He added: “I would love to have even more schoolchildren taking part in the Junior Run next year. Making schools and teachers aware of the event and encouraging families to take part will be a real focus for me for the rest of this year.”
All 18 past winners of the 10k were invited to help launch the anniversary event, with five attending on the day: Carolyn Milne (2006), Kyle Greig (2008), Nicola Gauld (2008, 2013), Chris Winward (2009) and Ben Hukins (2010, 2013).
Two schoolchildren who will be celebrating their 10th birthdays the same weekend as the 10k race also took part in the launch. Megan Robertson (Strathburn School) and Thomas Garvett (Monymusk School) joined Provost Webster in declaring online entries to Run Garioch 2015 open. Both children participated in the CP&Co. Junior Run last year.
Run Garioch 2015 will be held on Sunday, March 22. Entries are now open on www.rungarioch.co.uk. Entries to all races are limited, and will close towards the end of February to allow for the processing and posting of race packs, or when individual races sell out.
