The St Andrew’s Day parade and Christmas tree lights switch on will take place on Sunday (November 27) with activities and entertainment, put on by Inverurie Events, starting at 1.30 pm.
This year’s parade has a sub theme ‘remembering the battle of Harlaw’ with battle re-enactment groups taking part, including the new group set up to commemorate the battle, ‘Freens of Reid Harlaw’. There will also be live music from Chalmers Mackay School of Music by Sneek Attack, and from Luiza’s Vocal Session Plus.
The parade will have Inverurie, Ellon, and Kintore Pipebands as well as youth groups from the area - the Boys’ Brigade, Girl Guides, Scouts, Beavers, Colony Park FC, Army Cadet Force and Xpressions dance group.
Garioch Lions have organised a barbecue, the Rotary Club are running a car raffle with illumination lights from the Round Table.
There will also be a combination of craft and voluntary stalls from the Community Development Group and Garioch Heritage Society.
The St Andrew’s Day parade was started in 2008 and evolved to be held in conjunction with Help Light Up Inverurie - the town’s Christmas tree and lights switch-on and fireworks display.
The event was well received and soon became an annual community event supported by Inverurie Community Council. The event has grown and even last year, in horrendous weather conditions, the pipe bands, youth groups and members of the public still turned out in large numbers to have fun.
There will be no Christmas lights in the town this year as no funds are available to repair the lights which no longer work. However, Inverurie Events are actively fundraising to raise the £10,350 needed to repair and upgrade the lights to LED and have already raised in the region of £2,000.
Anyone wishing to donate to Inverurie Events to support Inverurie’s Christmas celebrations should send their cheque, payable to ‘Inverurie Events’, to 24 Esslemont Drive, Inverurie, AB51 3UP.
