Registration has opened for Garioch Sports Centre’s popular ‘Ten Weeks to Run Garioch’ Training Programme. The programme aims to prepare runners of all standards for the 5K, Specsavers 10K and Accord Energy Half-Marathon races at Run Garioch on March 24.
A registration evening will also be held on Wednesday, January 9 at 7pm at Garioch Sports Centre, where runners can learn more about the programme, meet their coaches and purchase new kit from retail partner Run4It.
The first night of training for the 5K and 10K programmes for absolute beginners and intermediate runners will be on Monday, January 14, and every Monday (6.30pm) and Thursday (7pm) thereafter until the race. Both 5K and 10K programmes are based on tried-and-tested Jog Scotland training schedules that progress participants gradually from walking to running, making them very suitable for even total novices.
Coaches on the 5K and 10K programme will also be making use of a bicycle kindly donated by Lindsey Ross of Pedal Power to keep a close eye on their runners.
The first night of training for the Half-Marathon programme, aimed at those who have already completed a 10K and delivered in conjunction with local club Garioch Roadrunners, will be Thursday, January 17 (7pm) and every Tuesday (6.30pm) and Thursday (7pm) thereafter. There will also be an optional long group run every weekend.
Run Garioch Race Director Eric Simpson said: “We had an unbelievable turnout for the programme last year, with runners of all abilities streaming through the streets of Inverurie together. Run Garioch is a community event, and I’d love to have as many people as possible from the Garioch area taking part in the event – no matter which race they choose. Our goal is to have 3000 runners next March and helping people learn to run for both fitness and fun is what our training programme is all about.”
Garioch Gazelles Jog Scotland Coach Jim Ross said: “We were so pleased to help so many people achieve their goals last year, whether it was a PB or just finishing the race. Our runners achieved so much last year, including one who went from beginner to Jog Scotland coach in just a year and one who lost two and a half stone.”
The cost of programme is £40 and places will be limited. To secure a place, applications can be submitted before the Registration Night at Garioch Sports Centre Reception. Contact them on (01467) 626141 for more information.
Entries for Run Garioch are now open on www.rungarioch.co.uk. Entries for the ‘Corporate Challenge’ of teams of four in the Specsavers 10K are also now available online.
